Depeche Mode
It is a supremely rare band that continues to push musical boundaries while still earning critical and commercial success after 25 years together. Rarer still are superstar artists who enjoy the kind of intense reverence that Depeche Mode command among a worldwide army of devoted fans and fellow musicians alike. Instantly recognisable, their signature style is a timeless fusion of electronic instrumentation with rock, pop, blues and even gospel elements. The music made by Martin Gore, Dave Gahan and Andy Fletcher does not just cross genres but entire generations.
The treasure trove of music contained in this digital box set adds up to 644 tracks spanning Depeche Mode's entire career. All of the band's 11 studio albums are included here, as well as additional tracks and several live collections reflecting their unbeatable reputation as concert performers. Between them these albums represent more than 40 million sales to date, 14 of them Top Ten hits, plus more than 10 million admissions to their electrifying live shows.
In addition, this box set includes all 45 of the band’s singles complete with all the B-sides and remixes. There are also rarities, these include 10 brand new and previously unreleased rehearsal and acoustic performances, 22 rare early live performances plus 42 rare remixes that have either been long deleted or previously unavailable. This is the most comprehensive anthology of the band's work ever assembled.
With this kind of track record, Depeche Mode clearly have an enduring flair for populist anthems that transcend fashion, era or national borders. But as many of the tracks here testify, they have also been consistent in their quest for sonic experimentation. One of the first bands to exploit nascent sampling technology over two decades ago, they were also early advocates of the remix long before the late 1980s dance music explosion. Even today, their interest in unusual noises and eclectic collaborators keeps their sound fresh and forward-looking.
Part of the first British wave of electronic pop acts, Depeche Mode formed in Basildon in 1980. With the new-minted purity of their 1981 debut "Speak and Spell", they tapped into the giddy excitement of the post-punk synthesiser boom. But the prolific string of albums they recorded in the decade that followed covered an enormous amount of ground, not just musically but sonically and emotionally too.
The sudden departure of founder member Vince Clarke immediately after "Speak And Spell" gave Martin Gore full expressive rein as the band's new primary songwriter. Thus romantic yearning, sexual obsession and dark humour increasingly came to dominate landmark albums like "Construction Time Again", "Some Great Reward" and "Black Celebration".
With new member Alan Wilder on board, the band's sound deepened and widened. By the time they composed the widescreen sci-fi travelogues of their 1987 album "Music For The Masses", Depeche Mode were on the brink of stadium-filling popularity worldwide. Their subsequent world tour culminated in the record-breaking Pasadena Rosebowl show that formed the basis for their acclaimed "101" concert film, directed by the legendary documentary maker D. A. Pennebaker, and a rousing live double album of the same name.
In 1990, Depeche Mode staked a strong claim on the new decade with the sleek, state-of-the-art pop dynamics of "Violator", an epochal release and still their best-selling album. Massive hit singles including "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy The Silence" reached out to a whole new generation of fans as the band played to massive crowds on their marathon World Violation tour.
But rather than repeat the "Violator" formula, they then pressed on into deeper waters, returning in 1993 with the confessional techno-blues gear-shift that fuelled "Songs of Faith and Devotion". This album's biting, sin-soaked mood reflected growing friction within the band, aggravated by Dave Gahan's dramatic battles with drug addiction and a notoriously excessive world tour. Despite these tensions, they still managed to record the meaty 1994 concert album, "Songs of Faith and Devotion Live".
The departure of Alan Wilder soon afterwards seemed to signal serious trouble for Depeche Mode. But after a spell in rehab, Gahan returned and Gore and Fletcher pulled the band back together in the studio. With the boomy, roomy beats and rumbles of their chart-topping 1997 comeback album "Ultra", the remaining Basildon trio proved rumours of their death had been exaggerated.
Kicking off their third decade together, Depeche Mode entered the 21st century by releasing the eclectic musical panorama of "Exciter" in 2001. With producer Mark Bell of LFO and Bjork fame helping to shape the album's innovative fusion of electronic and acoustic textures, the wide stylistic range within feels almost like an encyclopaedia of Gore's pop passions – from glam rock to disco to techno and beyond. Meanwhile Gahan's voice soars to strong, soulful new heights.
Following a brace of solo projects and a collection of remixes, the band's next studio release was "Playing The Angel" in 2005. Featuring Dave Gahan's first ever Depeche Mode songwriting credits alongside those of Martin Gore, this full-blooded beast of an album earned rave reviews and conquered the Top Ten. It was followed by the band's most successful world tour to date.
Even after 25 years of triumph and tension, friction and addiction, Depeche Mode continue to push boundaries and break records. This kind of chemistry is more than rare. It is priceless.
