New Studio Album ‘Delta Machine’ Set For Release March 26th on Columbia Records
Depeche Mode to Debut Video for First Single 'Heaven’ on VEVO Next Friday, February 1st
(Columbia Records; New York, NY; January 24, 2013) – Depeche Mode have announced they will release their highly anticipated 13th studio album, entitled Delta Machine, on March 26th worldwide via Columbia Records. The album, recorded over the last year in Santa Barbara, California and New York City, was produced by Ben Hillier and mixed by Flood. In addition to the album announcement, Depeche Mode have also confirmed that the video for the first single “Heaven” will debut on VEVO next Friday, February 1st. Alongside a standard CD format, Depeche Mode will release Delta Machine in an exclusive Deluxe Edition with four additional new tracks and accompanied by a 28 page hardcover book including photos by longtime artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn (please see track listing, as well as album and single configurations below).
Martin Gore said of the release, “Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern. I want people to feel good about listening to this record, to get some kind of peace. It’s just got something magical about it.”
Dave Gahan added, “With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album. When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode Sound. Delta Machine is no different, and I can’t wait for all of our fans to hear it.”
Following the release of their new album, Depeche Mode will embark on a European stadium tour, kicking off in Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park on May 7th. They will perform 34 shows in 25 European countries, featuring appearances at Milan’s famed San Siro Stadium, the Stade De France in Paris, and Moscow’s Locomotive Stadium before wrapping up the European leg of their tour in Minsk, Belarus on July 29. A full North American tour will follow, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Depeche Mode about the album's songs
"Welcome To My World"
Martin Gore: "It is true that Depeche Mode are more calm now than ever before. But this song is written from a much more personal point of view. I feel more at peace in my life and much better physically. Simply a happier person." "'Welcome To My World' started out with just some kind of loop that I got going on a modular system, and that led up to kind of like the first chorus."
"Heaven"
Dave Gahan: "Of all the incredible songs that Martin has written over the years that I have been lucky enough to sing and perform, once in a while a song comes along — hopefully I'll write one of those myself one day — that's something I have to sing. It's something I want to sing. It feels like I'm putting on a pair of boots that I've worn for years, that I love. It fits. As soon as I heard that song he had played me the demo, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. There's no other song like it on the record. That was one song from this record that I knew that this was gonna be the linchpin to this session. Everything has got to be as good as this. To me, 'Heaven' is one of the reasons why I still make music."
Andy Fletcher: "'Heaven' is interesting, because Martin really cracked it with this 'Heaven'. Pretty much, apart from Dave's voice instead of Martin's voice, the actual finished song is pretty similar to the demo."
Martin Gore: "'Heaven' was written on a piano. I had all the chords and everything all worked out on the piano and the whole vocal melody and the lyrics worked out before I went anywhere near a computer."
"Secret To The End"
Dave Gahan: "Getting cancer certainly did affect what I wrote. When that phrase came out, "I can feel the presence of God" from 'Presence Of God' I'm thinking, I can't sing that! And 'Secret To The End' for Delta Machine, every verse ending with, "Is this the end? Should this be the end?" It was seeing myself for the first time. The wondering "Why, why, why? What's it all about?" I'm going to do something useful with it, try to be the best father and husband I can be... and the best musician. I wrote myself back into life."
"My Little Universe"
Martin Gore: "Out of all of my songs on Delta Machine, that's the one that changed dramatically. For ages, we'd think that it wasn't gonna go on the album, because it somehow didn't quite fit. It was too fiddly, it had chord changes that it didn't need. So we stripped it right back. And I think our programmer, Christoffer Berg, should take a lot of credit for that. He was the one who kind of started stripping it back, and started on that path."
Andy Fletcher: "Well, 'My Little Universe' is a very techno track. It's out there, that one. It's a little jewel, that track. It sort of breaks up the more built up tracks and where it is on the album — track 5 — it's really a nice position. What happened with that song, it was just sort of a normal pop track really and we layered and layered and layered stuff on it and it wasn't sounding right so in the end we just completely stripped it down to how it is now, and now it sounds great. I'm talking about so much stuff "on," so many tracks used up, and really just taking bare elements of things — a couple of melodies, a couple of sequencers. It's just amazing. That's one of the nice surprises really. We thought that track was going nowhere and could see it just as a bonus track or something but out of the blue a bit of magic occurred."
"Slow"
Martin Gore: "'Slow' is a sensitive, erotic song about the joy of sex. Sometimes, things are very simple."
Dave Gahan: "I think it was a song from even earlier than that maybe. Maybe it was a song that was written for Songs Of Faith And Devotion. I don't really remember. It might be Songs Of Faith And Devotion it was written for. But at the time... as soon as I heard it, I said to Martin: "That's an old song." And he said: "Yeah, I needed to reinterpret it." He'd kind of reworked it. When Martin was demoing before, I seem to remember sitting in a meeting when we listened to the demos, and Alan Wilder kind of not getting it, just kind of... well, out of songs that we were going to record it just wasn't chosen at that particular time. So I guess Martin put it away, and it fits really well with everything we're doing now. Because of its blues influence, and I think Martin pulled from that school a lot more on this record."
Andy Fletcher: "That, believe it or not, was a song that was written for Songs Of Faith And Devotion and for some bizarre reason never got recorded. Martin was going through his demos and came across it and said "Actually, this is quite good" so he did a new demo and it's a great song."
"Should Be Higher"
Dave Gahan: "I was out Christmas Eve, a nice restaurant, everyone drinking. I thought, 'Why can't I just have a glass of wine?' But I don't any more, because even one glass opens a whole Pandora's box. My mind immediately thinks, I can go much higher. That's what 'Should Be Higher' is about — that line, 'The lies are more attractive than the truth.' I still draw on that stuff when I'm singing and performing, to dig my way out of trouble."
"Goodbye"
Martin Gore: "It's a bad thing to say that it sounds like The Beatles because everyone is going to say, 'What are you talking about?' But it reminds me of The Beatles or something. That's a dangerous thing to say."
"Long Time Lie"
Martin Gore: "This time it really felt like a proper collaboration, even though we weren't together in the studio when we wrote it. I first wrote a slower instrumental track, but Ben Hillier thought that it would be a good idea if Dave were to add lyrics and melodies to it. So that's what he did, and during a recording session I took it with me and reconstructed the instrumental part around it. But it feels more as though we have created the song together."
Dave Gahan: "He motioned toward me, 'What do you think?' and I was like, 'It's cool.' Ben Hillier, who's producing the record, said, 'I think Martin was trying to see if you're interested in writing anything to that.' I just let it absorb into me for a few days. I came up with something and recorded it, and Martin seemed very happy."
