Regardless of the multiple variations on the credit, Shep Pettibone only did one 12 inch version of "Behind The Wheel" (along with a 7 inch version, and a Dub Version which appears on a U.S. promotional 12 inch).

The real unique item was the U.K. promotional 7 inch single. That release contained a remix (rumored to be by Daniel Miller) which was never released anywhere else, but was used as the track the band lip-sync'd to on a few U.K. TV shows at the time. It is rather hard to spot the promotional 7 inch single, because it looks identical to the commercial release, aside from the catalog number "DJ BONG 15" etched into the wax, near the label (the matrix number). Even rarer than this standard promotional 7 inch is the 7 inch test pressing. While it contains the same rare remix, the b side of the test pressing isn't even Depeche Mode. It is an unknown artist performing the very un-Depeche track "Dueling Banjos"!

The "Behind The Wheel / Route 66" Megamix was a US-only remix. The "Megadub" only appeared on the commercial 12 inch single. The "Behind The Wheel / Route 66 (Megamix)" and the "Route 66 / Behind The Wheel (Mega-Single Mix)" are only officially available on CD on this US promotional CD. The "Megamix", along with a "Megadub" version, appeared on the commercial US 12 inch release. The "Behind The Wheel / Route 66 (Mega-Single Mix)" appeared on CD on the commercial compilation "Just Say Yo", a sampler CD released by Sire Records. The rest of the mixes have appeared on the commercial "Behind The Wheel" CD single.

On the US promotional 12 inch single, the "Dub" (mixed by Shep Pettibone, who also did the "Extended Remix") and the "7 inch DJ Remix" are exclusive to the 12 inch single. The 7 inch promotional release is identical in content to the commercial issue.

"Behind the Wheel" was written by Martin Gore. "Route 66" was written by Robert William Troup Jr.
